How to get onto the first page on Google without SEO

You have a blog, maybe you have been running it for quite a while, and you are hoping to attract lots of followers and maybe on the back of that make money through adverts and the sale of products – yours or somebody else’s. BUT something is just not working. You do a search on Google and your site is nowhere to be found.

Maybe you are one of the millions of other bloggers lost in hyperspace. Not much fun, right?

One of the problems might be that you are competing in a busy field, the toughest probably being – “how to make money online.” Or you might have a blog aimed at “making money from blogging.”

These are highly competitive and when you consider the popular Internet marketing and blogging sites out there – Problogger or super marketer Seth Godin – your site might not seem like it has, to put it simply, a chance in hell.

But all is not lost.

Google upgrades

It is important to look at how Google works and to keep in mind that is regularly upgrades its search operations. Google wants to provide a great search experience and does not want the searcher to get bogged down in a pile of rubbish or material that duplicates top sites.

Not to get bogged down in the details but there were a couple of occasions over the last two years when Google made dramatic changes. One was called “Panda” and one was called “Penguin.”

One of the aims was to get rid of low-grade sites turning up high in the search.

Quality content

Google wants searchers to find quality content. So if you put up relevant quality content on your site, you improve your chances. Keywords are important but it is not just a matter of stuffing your posts with keywords. Overall quality matters as well.

Unique content

It is not just a matter of copying something – or worse, copy and pasting (stealing?) from somebody else’s website. Original material matters.

Regular updates

Google favors sites that regularly put up new material. So regular posting helps.

Easy to use site

It helps if your website is easy to navigate. If it is a mess, it is hard for visitors and could throw up a red flag to Google.

Using social media

Social media matters. Make sure you link your posts and new material to social media. Engage the crowd. People are keen to interact and if you put up the good stuff and people get chatting about it, that helps. So use Facebook, Twitter, and other social media forums creatively and genuinely engage.

In summary – try to put up good material regularly and engage with your readers. If all goes well, when people do a search on Google, your site will turn up on the first page.
